Veteran Colorado Aerospace Company Teaming with Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation to Support Future Michigan Space Command and Control (C2) Center

Oakman Aerospace, Inc. (OAI), headquartered in Colorado’s Aerospace Alley, announced it is currently in talks with Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation (CCEDC) to support Michigan’s development into a US space state through a new command center to support satellite launch and daily operations. News of the veteran-owned aerospace company’s advocacy of a future Michigan-based command center comes on the heels of Michigan Aerospace Manufacturers Association’s (MAMA) announcement last week naming Chippewa County International Airport (CIU) as one of six finalists for the new command and control center. Colorado-based OAI is no stranger to Michigan’s race for space, with deep familial roots in the state going back generations.

“We started Oakman Aerospace eight years ago out of Colorado, which remains one of the fastest growing hubs for space activity in the country. Almost a decade later, and as a family owned company, we are thrilled to have this opportunity to return to our Michigan roots in support of MAMA’s efforts to make Michigan a space state,” said Stanley O. Kennedy, Jr., Co-founder, President, and Chief Systems Engineer of Oakman Aerospace, Inc. “As Michigan land owners and community leaders, the Kennedy family has participated in the state’s development for many years. This is how we know the hardworking people of Michigan and its growing space ecosystem are poised to make the state a future leader of the US space industry.”

Initial discussions between OAI and CCEDC have centered around the strategic planning of a competitive bid for MAMA’s consideration of the Chippewa area for the future command and control center.

“We are very excited at the opportunity to work with such an Industry leader to bring aerospace economic opportunity to Chippewa County. The collaboration of Oakman Aerospace and the Chippewa County EDC will present a premier case for site selection in the region,” stated Chris Olson, President of the Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation.

The command center, along with two launch sites in Marquette and Oscoda, are projected to create more than 2,000 jobs. MAMA currently expects to complete the command center site selection by November 2020.
